On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, a one-day workshop focused on teaching, learning, and innovation in higher education was held at the University of Health Science in Bosaso. The event was organized by the Association of Puntland Universities (APU), a collaborative body representing universities across Puntland. Educators and tutors from four institutions—The University of Bosaso (UOB), Red Sea University (RSU), University of Health Science (UOHS), and East African University (EAU)—participated in the training.
The workshop was facilitated by Prof. Abdirahman Sheikhdon, Vice Chancellor of Garowe Teachers Training College and current Secretary of APU. It was specifically designed to enhance educational quality by focusing on both teaching and learning processes. The primary objective was to improve learning outcomes by equipping educators with innovative teaching methods tailored to the local context.
By introducing effective pedagogical approaches, the workshop aimed to elevate the quality of classroom instruction and foster active student engagement. Participants acquired essential knowledge and skills to develop dynamic, learner-centered techniques that promote deeper understanding of theoretical content, practical skills, and critical thinking.
The workshop provided a comprehensive exploration of both theoretical frameworks and practical applications vital to teaching innovations in higher education. Educators learned how to strategically plan lessons and implement innovative, learner-centered approaches. This dual focus enabled them to gain a nuanced understanding of various methods for enhancing the student experience.
Additionally, the training facilitated plenary discussions on professional strategic development, allowing participants to identify areas for improvement and acquire tools to enhance instructional techniques. Emphasizing the importance of academic integrity and standards, the workshop sought to cultivate meaningful learning strategies that promote student engagement and success, addressing the diverse needs of learners.
Ultimately, the workshop aimed to strike a balance between maintaining academic rigor and adapting new teaching techniques, ensuring that learning outcomes are optimized and accessible to a wider range of students.
